The first of four teams to head to the NCAA Final Four will move on Monday when the Oregon State Beavers take on the Houston Cougars. This game features the red hot Beavers, who were 12th seed, against the 2nd seeded Houston Cougars. The Cougars come into this game listed at -7.5 at MyBookie over Oregon State.
Beavers Keep Rolling
The Oregon State Beavers have won six straight games, including wins over UCLA, Oregon and Colorado in the Pac-12 tournament to even make the big dance. In the NCAA Tournament, upset wins over Tennessee, Oklahoma State and Loyola have them to this spot. The Beavers during the six game winning streak have scored 70+ in 5 out of 6 games. More importantly, Oregon State has allowed 70 or less in 5 out of 6.
In the win over Loyola, Ethan Thompson played all 40 minutes, and scored a team high 22 pints. He was aided by knocking down all 8 of his free throws. On the season, Thompson is scoring 15.8 points per game. The only other Beaver scoring double digits per game is Jarod Lucas, with just over 12.5 per game.
Sampson Has a Squad
Kelvin Sampson has himself a squad at Houston. This Cougars team is tremendous, with their 27-3 record. Overall, the Cougars have won 10 straight games. The last time Houston dropped a game was back on February 18th on the road at Wichita State. In the AAC Tournament, Houston was able to down Tulane, Memphis and Cincinnati. Those three wins came by an average of 21 points per game.
In the Big Dance, the Cougars smacked Cleveland STate by 31, took down Rutgers by 3 and beat Syracuse by 16. Former Kansas signee Quentin Grimes leads the Cougars in scoring. He is part of three guys averaging double digits per game, leading the pack with 18 per game. Grimes has scored double digits in every game over his last 12 games.
The Cougars defense is what will lead them to a championship. Sampson’s squad continues to be one of the elite defenses in the country. In their most recent game, they held the red hot Syracuse Orange to 46 points. In the tournament, they are allowing 54 points per game
Dreams Come True; and Also End
The Oregon State Beavers have been a great story. The Pac-12 has been outstanding in the NCAA Tournament. But, all dreams come to an end, and in this one, this is where the story of the 2021 Oregon State Beavers stops. The Beavers are fun to watch, but going up against the more athletic Houston Cougars team is going to be where they have met their match.
Houston is going to want to get up and down the court, but the Cougars can also guard with the best in the country. Look for Kelvin Sampson and his Houston Cougars to be the first team to reach the Final Four. Houston pulls away late and covers the spread in this game.
